Story songs have always been popular. A whole narrative (plot, setting, heroes, villains, conflict, closure) in 4 or 5 minutes, set to music. A standard of folk music, but rock and country & western have made use of the medium too. Johnny Cash, Bobbie Gentry, Jim Croce, Mark Kopfler and more all have a story to tell.
