Emily Dickinson: The Character of Amherst

Date May 31 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location Ligonier Valley Library
120 West Main Street
Ligonier, PA 15668 United States

Join us and Emily Dickinson expert and scholar, Jim Arnold, for a presentation on the poet herself. The title of the presentation, “The Character of Amherst”, is based on a letter sent by Emily’s first publisher, Mabel Loomis Todd, to her parents in 1881. She describes this peculiar woman who is very different from the others – “I must tell you about the character of Amherst… whom all the people call the myth.” This presentation will showcase Emily as a boundary-breaking poet who challenged the conventional nature of poetry and women’s writing at the time. There will be a brief Q&A following the presentation.
