These experiences earned him the respect of his fellow countrymen and appointment of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and later the first president of the United States.  With his accomplishments and revered character it begs the question was Washington possibly THE Greatest American?\nMartin West holds a Master of Arts in Public History and was the director of Fort Ligonier for three decades.  He also served for seven years on the Advisory Council of George Washington Scholars\, Mount Vernon\, Virginia\, and annotated Washington’s “Remarks” for George Washington Remembers: Reflection the French and Indian War.
