DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on pottery class\, students will create a slab-built trinket dish\, coaster set\, or spoon rest while exploring the sgraffito technique.  Sgraffito\, meaning “to scratch” in Italian\, is a decorative process where layers of underglaze are applied to the clay surface and then carefully carved away to reveal a contrasting design underneath.  Students will learn to apply underglaze to clay slabs\, and use carving tools to etch patterns\, textures\, or illustrations into their pieces.
